Napa Valley Appellations Explained: A Winemaker's Map to All 17

All 17 Napa Valley appellations explained by a Stags Leap District winemaker: the soils, the climate, and one flavor takeaway you can verify in a glass.

When people ask me about Napa Valley, they usually mean the big idea of it: the Silverado Trail, the sun, the Cabernet. But “Napa Valley” is actually an appellation that contains 17 smaller appellations, each with its own soil type, climate, and flavor signature. That’s not marketing language. The differences are measurable, and if you’ve spent time tasting wines from different parts of this valley, they’re identifiable in the glass without looking at the label.

I farm in the Stags Leap District, where Baldacci sits, but I’ve been tasting Napa wines from all over the valley for years. Some of these appellations I know deeply from farming and side-by-side tasting. Others I know from study and enough bottles to have a real sense of the character. What I want to give you here is a working map, not a marketing tour. Here’s what each appellation actually produces, and what makes the difference.

The Geography That Makes the Flavor Differences Make Sense

Three variables explain most of the flavor differences between Napa’s appellations: distance from San Pablo Bay, elevation, and soil origin.

Before we go through the appellations one by one, a few things about the valley’s shape that explain why the wines taste the way they do.

Napa Valley runs roughly 30 miles north to south, from the city of Napa at the southern end to Calistoga at the northern tip. The Mayacamas Mountains form the western wall and the Vaca Mountains form the eastern wall. That terrain controls how the weather moves through the valley.

The southern end opens to San Pablo Bay, and from there marine influence pushes north: morning fog, cooler temperatures, strong afternoon winds. By the time you get to Calistoga, 30 miles north, you’re cut off from that marine influence by a narrowing of the valley and a ring of mountains. Calistoga regularly runs 10 to 15 degrees warmer than Carneros at the valley’s southern edge.

That temperature gradient is the most important piece of context for understanding every appellation on this list. The closer to the Bay, the more cool-climate character: higher acid, more restrained fruit, wines that need time. The further north and inland, the richer and more generous the wine. The mountains add a second dimension: elevation brings temperature swings, thinner soil, and structure that the valley floor can’t produce.

The 17 Napa Sub-Appellations

The 17 sub-AVAs sort into three zones: the cool south (Los Carneros, Wild Horse Valley, Coombsville, Oak Knoll District), the valley floor warming as it runs north (Yountville, Stags Leap District, Oakville, Rutherford, St. Helena, Calistoga), and the mountain appellations on the two ridgelines (Mount Veeder, Spring Mountain District, and Diamond Mountain District on the Mayacamas side; Howell Mountain, Crystal Springs of Napa Valley, Atlas Peak, and Chiles Valley District on the Vaca side). Here they are, roughly south to north.

Los Carneros

Carneros is where the ocean makes itself felt. The appellation straddles the southern end of both Napa and Sonoma counties, and its defining characteristic is the consistent marine influence from San Pablo Bay: cool temperatures, morning fog, and strong afternoon winds that push heat out of the vineyards through the afternoon. This is not Cabernet Sauvignon country. The climate is closer to Burgundy than to the rest of Napa, and the varieties that thrive here reflect that. Carneros is the valley’s home for Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and the sparkling wine programs that need naturally high acidity to work.

What you taste in a Carneros wine is exactly what the geography suggests: acid and freshness. When I’m reaching for the cool-climate counterpoint in a conversation about Napa, Carneros is always the example. It’s the same county, completely different conversation.

Wild Horse Valley

Wild Horse Valley is one of Napa’s smallest and least-planted sub-AVAs, sitting in the hills east of the city of Napa. Even cooler and more isolated than Carneros, it’s mostly planted to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Very few producers work here and the wines rarely appear outside specialist retailers. It marks the eastern boundary of Napa’s cool-climate character. If you find a bottle from Wild Horse Valley, expect something closer to Sonoma Coast than to valley-floor Napa.

Coombsville

Coombsville was granted its AVA status in 2011, making it one of the newer designations in the valley. It sits in the hills east and southeast of the city of Napa, sheltered from the valley’s heat by volcanic ridgelines from Mount George. That protection from heat is the key: Coombsville stays cool enough that the wines carry more natural acidity and more restrained fruit character than their valley-floor counterparts at similar latitudes. The volcanic soils contribute structure. The result is Cabernet Sauvignon that can surprise people who expect all Napa Cab to be rich and generous from the start. Coombsville Cabs often need more time and reward patience.

Oak Knoll District of Napa Valley

Oak Knoll is the coolest valley-floor appellation in Napa, sitting just north of Carneros at the widest part of the valley where marine influence from San Pablo Bay still reaches. The appellation is distinctive for being able to grow both warm-climate varieties (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot) and cool-climate varieties (Chardonnay, Riesling) at a quality level you don’t see in the warmer parts of the valley. The Cabernet Sauvignon from Oak Knoll tends to be more structured and restrained than mid-valley benchmarks, with good natural acidity and a longer arc to full maturity. It doesn’t have the same immediate fruit richness of Oakville or Rutherford, but it has something those appellations don’t: a natural freshness that keeps the wine alive longer in the glass.

Yountville

Yountville sits just north of Oak Knoll and has less marine influence, which shows in the wines. The Cabernet here tends toward more ripeness and generosity than the southern appellations without reaching the full power of the mid-valley benchmarks further north. The appellation is small and the town is best known for its concentration of exceptional restaurants. In terms of flavor character, Yountville is a transitional zone: warmer than Oak Knoll, cooler than Oakville, producing Cabernet that sits somewhere between the two in structure and expression. It shows the temperature gradient at work in a way that’s useful once you’ve tasted your way north and south of it.

Stags Leap District

This is home. The Stags Leap District sits on the eastern side of the Napa Valley, tucked between the Silverado Trail and the palisades of volcanic basalt that define the eastern edge of the appellation. Those palisades are the geological story here: the volcanic rock radiates heat back into the vineyards in the evening, the soil is volcanic in origin with a structure that encourages the vine to work for its water, and the combination produces Cabernet Sauvignon that I’ve heard described for as long as I’ve been working in Napa as an iron fist in a velvet glove.

That description is accurate. The Stags Leap District produces wines with real power and density, but the tannins have a polish and a fineness to them that you don’t get in the mountain appellations or in the richer, more broadly fruited mid-valley floor. The wine can feel elegant and almost accessible when it’s young, but there’s structure underneath that develops in the bottle over years. The Judgment of Paris in 1976 put Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars’ SLV Cabernet at the top of a blind tasting against the best red Bordeaux estates in the world. That was not an accident of the vintage. It was a product of what this specific piece of ground does.

Oakville

Oakville is where you go to understand what Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon became famous for. The appellation sits in the heart of the valley floor, where deep alluvial soils, warm days, and moderate nights produce Cabernet with serious fruit concentration, structure, and aging potential all working together. This is the address of some of the most celebrated wines made anywhere: Opus One, Screaming Eagle, Harlan Estate, Mondavi To Kalon.

Oakville and Howell Mountain are both serious wines, but they operate on different timelines. Oakville tends to offer more fruit accessibility in youth while still having the structure to age significantly. Howell Mountain asks for patience from the start. Both can reach exceptional heights, but Oakville gets there in a way that feels more inevitable from early on, and that accessibility is part of why it became the benchmark for Napa Cabernet’s international reputation.

Rutherford

Rutherford sits north of Oakville and produces Cabernet Sauvignon with a character specific enough that wine people have a name for it: Rutherford Dust. The phrase describes a dusty, earthy quality on the mid-palate, a texture that’s distinctly different from neighboring appellations and is tied to the clay-rich alluvial soils of the valley floor in this part of the valley. The Inglenook estate and Beaulieu Vineyard’s Georges de Latour Reserve are the historical benchmarks. Tasting great Rutherford Cab side by side with great Oakville Cab is one of the more instructive exercises in Napa appellation comparison: same variety, same latitude, different soil structure, clearly different mid-palate character. The dust is real.

St. Helena

St. Helena is the most densely planted section of the valley floor, where the Mayacamas and Vaca ranges converge and the valley narrows. That narrowing creates a natural heat trap: warm days with less air movement than the open southern valley, which pushes ripeness and produces some of the fullest-bodied wines in the appellation. The wineries concentrated here read like a syllabus for Napa history: Beringer (Napa Valley’s oldest continuously operating winery), Heitz Cellar, Duckhorn Vineyards, Newton. St. Helena Cabernet Sauvignon is generous, warm-climate wine. It doesn’t have the precision tannin of Stags Leap or the structured restraint of the mountain appellations, but it has a richness and fullness that is its own kind of statement about what Napa can do when it’s operating at full warmth.

Calistoga

Calistoga sits at the northern tip of the valley, ringed by mountains that block the marine influence that defines the southern end. The result is the warmest appellation in Napa, and the wines reflect that directly: warm fruit, generosity, and texture that’s different from what you get anywhere else in the valley. The soils here have a volcanic character, influenced by the same geological forces that created the Palisades to the south, and that volcanic component adds mineral depth to wines that could otherwise read as simply ripe.

Calistoga Cabernet is not wine to open early, but when it’s ready, it’s the expression of Napa at its most confident. Davis Estate is a good reference point for the appellation: family-owned, appointment-only, excellent food and wine pairing program, and wines that represent what Calistoga can do when the warmth and the volcanic soils are working together.

Mount Veeder

Mount Veeder occupies the Mayacamas Mountains above Yountville and Oakville on the western side of the valley. The elevation brings wide day-night temperature swings, thin volcanic and sedimentary soils, and wines with a more austere, structured character than valley-floor Napa. Mount Veeder produces Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc-based blends that are distinctly their own thing: leaner, more mineral, more tannic in youth, and built for serious aging. The Pacific fog influence can reach the western-facing slopes, adding a cool-climate dimension that doesn’t exist on the eastern side of the valley. Mount Veeder is not the right starting point for someone new to Napa wine, but for someone who wants to understand what mountain tannin means in practice alongside valley-floor benchmarks, it’s a necessary reference.

Spring Mountain District

Spring Mountain sits in the Mayacamas Mountains above St. Helena, and like all of the mountain appellations, it produces wines with more structure and density than the valley floor at similar latitudes. The soils are a mix of volcanic and sedimentary, and the wines have a distinctly mineral quality alongside the mountain tannin. Spring Mountain is best known for Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot that can age for decades. The appellation is more rugged in character than the southern mountain AVAs, the wines tend toward restraint rather than generosity, and they reveal their best qualities only with time. For a Napa wine drinker who has worked through the valley-floor benchmarks and wants to explore what the mountains offer, Spring Mountain is a natural next destination.

Diamond Mountain District

Diamond Mountain is a compact, high-elevation appellation in the northwestern corner of the valley, just above Calistoga. The soils are volcanic, the elevation is significant, and the wines are powerful in a way that announces itself immediately. Diamond Creek Vineyards is the historical anchor of the appellation, producing three distinct Cabernets from three different soil types within a single estate (Volcanic Hill, Gravelly Meadow, Red Rock Terrace) that have been making the case for Napa terroir specificity since the 1970s. Diamond Mountain Cabernet has mountain structure and northern-valley warmth working at the same time, which creates a profile that’s genuinely unlike anything else in the valley. It is not a wine for the impatient.

Crystal Springs of Napa Valley

The newest name on the map, and the reason older guides say sixteen. Crystal Springs was established in late 2024, the first new appellation inside Napa Valley in 13 years. It covers about 4,100 acres of hillside on the lower western slopes of Howell Mountain, between the valley floor around St. Helena and Calistoga and below Howell Mountain’s 1,400-foot boundary. That in-between elevation is the point: these slopes sit above the deepest morning fog but below the true mountain exposure, so the fruit ripens differently from both the floor beneath and the ridge above. The appellation is too young for its name to mean much on a label yet, because most fruit grown here has historically gone into wines labeled simply Napa Valley. But the growers who made the federal case for it demonstrated a real, measurable difference, and that is the whole idea of an appellation. Watch this one develop.

Howell Mountain

Howell Mountain is on the eastern side of the valley, elevated above the valley floor along the eastern ridgeline. The appellation sits above the fog line, which means the vines get more direct sun exposure and more UV than valley-floor vineyards, and the diurnal temperature swings are wider. The result is Cabernet Sauvignon with dense, concentrated fruit and tannins that earn the description I’ve used more than once: mountain tannins don’t apologize.

Howell Mountain wine needs years in the bottle before it shows its best. Opening a bottle young often delivers something too structured to be enjoyable. But a Howell Mountain Cabernet at twelve or fifteen years is one of the strongest arguments for patience in wine. The tannins that seemed excessive at four years have integrated and become the wine’s defining asset. Dunn Vineyards is the most famous name from this appellation, and if you want to understand what Howell Mountain Cabernet becomes with time, that’s where you start.

Atlas Peak

Atlas Peak sits in the mountains northeast of the city of Napa, above the Stags Leap District. The elevation is significant and the soils are volcanic, producing wines with more rustic structure and mineral intensity than most valley-floor Napa. The appellation is most closely associated with Antinori’s Antica winery, which planted both Italian varieties and Cabernet Sauvignon here. Atlas Peak is not well-known outside of Napa specialist circles, but the elevation and volcanic soils give it a flavor profile that’s distinctly its own: structured, mineral, and built to age.

Chiles Valley District

Chiles Valley is the most geographically isolated appellation in Napa, sitting east of Howell Mountain in a separate valley with a more Continental climate: less fog, wider temperature swings, and a higher percentage of Zinfandel than almost anywhere else in the county. The wines rarely appear outside regional retailers, but the Zinfandel in particular can be excellent: concentrated, structured, and distinctly Napa in character. Worth knowing it exists even if it won’t be your first encounter with Napa wine.

What to Do With This Map

If there’s a single takeaway from all 17, it’s this: Napa Valley is not one climate. It’s a 30-mile stretch of territory with one of the most dramatic temperature gradients in American wine, a set of mountain ranges that create distinct micro-climates on every facing, and 17 federally recognized sub-appellations that represent real, measurable differences in what you’ll taste in the glass. The wine that comes out of Carneros and the wine that comes out of Howell Mountain both say “Napa Valley” on the label. They are not the same conversation.

For most people, the practical use of this map is sequencing. Start with the valley-floor benchmarks that made Napa famous: Stags Leap District, Oakville, Rutherford. Once you have those as reference points, the mountain appellations and the cool-climate southern AVAs make more sense because you have something to compare against. The valley reveals itself better when you’ve spent time with the center first.

From there, the rest make sense because you have reference points.
