Tasting Notes
This vintage is the first year that we created the blend without our Carneros Syrah. The 2013 Fraternity is based on a blend of outstanding Cabernet Sauvignon from our Stella Knight and Stags Leap properties. In addition, we have added a small percent of Cabernet Sauvignon from Oakville. The resulting wine is a dense, jammy, dark fruit expression of Cabernet Sauvignon with nice red fruit notes from our estate Merlot. The flavors are rich and lush and the tannin structure is more integrated ending with a long and balanced finish.
Vineyard Notes
The Four Sons Fraternity is a combination of fruit sourced from our two estate vineyards, the Family Ranch in the Stags Leap District and our Honey B Vineyard location in Carneros. The blend is a balance of the two growing regions with Stags Leap offering a longer growing season of warm days and cool nights—and Carneros influenced by the cooling effect of the Pacific Ocean combined with summer fog, warm days, and a long, temperature growing season. The blend utilizes the best of both regions and allows us to emphasize the different components in distinctive final blend. The 2013 vintage a largely uneventful with an early harvest marked by warm weather and no threat of rain. Quality across the board was outstanding. The white wines have trended towards bright acidity with vibrant flavors and balance. The Indian summer provided ideal weather to prolong harvest which allowed us to pick each block at peak flavor levels and phenolic maturity.
Winemaker Notes
All of our fruit passes through a small de-stemmer and is never crushed. We then bleed a percentage of the juice to allow for an increased ratio of skin to juice which adds structure, mouthfeel and color to the final wine. Our pump over fermentations are less aggressive to allow for a more gentle and supple final wine. Once fermentation is complete the wine is racked clean into oak barrels where it passes through a native inoculation of malolactic fermentation and then ages for 17 - 19 months prior to bottling.

At Baldacci this morning, great nose of rich, black cherry fruit, blackberry, baker's chocolate, and chalky earth, note the new label, and 20% Merlot and no Syrah this year, more of the same on the palate, medium/big body, great tasting Cabernet Sauvignon, at it's peak, buy now as the $40 price makes this the REAL DEAL, has a long, long finish.
