Napa Valley 2016 Vintage Reviews

“One of the strongest vintages for Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley.” -Jancis Robinson

“The 2016s continue to impress with their dazzling aromatic presence, finesse and nuance.” -Antonio Galloni, Vinous

“I believe 2016 to be the best, most consistent Napa Valley vintage among a string of five great years: 2012-2016.” -Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Robert Parker Wine Advocate

“The 2016 vintage is unquestionably one of the finest for California Cabernet Sauvignon in the past two decades, writes Matthew Luczy. A relatively calm growing season gave wines that exude power, nuance, and precision. Ripening and harvest occurred in waves, leaving producers the luxury of leeway with picking decisions.” -Decanter

“The near-perfect 2016 growing season started early, saw ideal weather conditions throughout and wrapped up as the valley’s first significant fall rainstorm arrived on October 14. Thanks to a relatively steady and mild July and August and then a series of warm days at the end of the growing season, vineyards were able to progress to perfect ripeness. Wines from the 2016 vintage are now quietly developing in cellars throughout Napa Valley and vintners are pinching themselves and smiling for the gift it appears Mother Nature has given them: a fifth consecutive vintage of stellar quality Napa Valley wines.” -Napa Valley Vintners

2016 Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon

Lincoln Creek Vineyard and UC Davis Vineyard, Oakville AVA

Lincoln Creek Vineyard is on the east side of Hwy 29 and has been planted to wine grapes for over 100 years. The soil is primarily volcanic. The UC Davis Vineyard is on the west side of Hwy 29 and the soil is more alluvial with higher drainage.

Aromas & Flavors

Raspberry, Red Cherry, Red Plum, Baking Spice, Vanilla

Structure

Approachable, with plush and juicy tannins and a core of dark fruit and oak complexity.

2016 Black Label Cabernet Sauvignon

Winery Ranch Vineyard, Stags Leap District AVA

Our winery property in the Stags Leap District has been the foundation of our story since we purchased the vineyard in 1998. The diversity of the soils and the changes in topography have made it possible to divide the 20-acre parcel into 12 distinct vineyard blocks with separate clone and rootstock combinations. We launched our family winery with our Black Label Cabernet Sauvignon and this wine remains at the heart of what we do.

Aromas & Flavors

Ripe Cherry, Espresso, Baking Spice, Dark Chocolate, Nutmeg

Structure

Elegantly structured, showcasing the finesse of Stags Leap District with refined tannins and layered dark fruit.

2016 Calistoga Cabernet Sauvignon

Stella Knight Vineyard, Calistoga AVA

Our family purchased this little gem of a vineyard in 2013. It is nestled into the base of the Diamond Mountain District, which provides a shading effect and results in a balanced fruit profile with a lower pH than many other vineyards from this extremely warm growing region.

Aromas & Flavors

Plum, Blackberry, Baking Spice, Mocha, Vanilla

Structure

Powerful and robust, characterized by bold tannins and intense, ripe fruit flavors.

2016 Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon

Heitz Ink Grade Vineyard, Howell Mountain AVA

This appellation is known for small berries, low yields, and a shorter growing season. We welcomed the opportunity to work with this well-known vineyard and to create a wine from this classic mountain AVA.

Aromas & Flavors

Wild Blackberry, Dark Chocolate, Graphite, Tobacco, Cedar

Structure

Structured and mountain fruit-driven, featuring firm tannins, high acidity, and concentrated, dark berry notes.

2016 Diamond Mountain District Cabernet Sauvignon

Stella Knight Vineyard, Diamond Mountain District

The fruit from the upper section of Block 3 serves as a stand-alone expression from our Stella Knight Vineyard. The porous soil and slope of this block create additional complexity and minerality in the wine’s profile.

Aromas & Flavors

Blackberry, Black Cherry, Boysenberry, Sandalwood, Vanilla

Structure

Bold and textured, with mountain terroir influence, presenting structured tannins and deep, complex fruit.

2016 Brenda’s Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

Winery Ranch, Stags Leap District

Sourced from the blocks that show the most concentration and consistency within the fruit profile, the characteristic richness and perfume of the Stags Leap District fruit marries perfectly with the medium to heavy toast French oak during maturation.

Aromas & Flavors

Blackberry, Black Licorice, Brown Sugar, Cigar Box, Vanilla

Structure

A masterful blend of elegance and power, displaying the refined tannins of Stags Leap District and the richness of a reserve wine.
